News: Fragmented Systems and Unplanned Work Challenge UK Professional Services Firms
Unit4, a provider of enterprise cloud applications for people-centric organizations, has published research revealing the productivity and financial challenges facing UK professional services firms. Released on 24 September 2026, the findings show that project delivery and operational managers lose almost one working day each week to inefficiency and unplanned work.
The research, conducted by Vanson Bourne among 125 UK decision-makers in professional services and related industries, highlights how fragmented systems, manual processes and limited project visibility are restricting operational performance.
Unplanned Work Reduces Productivity and Profitability
According to the findings, approximately 30% of project time is attributed to unplanned work, while inefficiency accounts for an estimated 8% of project revenue. Additionally, 69% of UK firms reported an increase in unplanned work over the previous 12 months.
Common causes include scope changes or unclear requirements, rework and error correction, chasing updates and approvals, and internal meetings that deliver limited value.
These disruptions affect more than productivity. The research found that 58% of respondents reported an impact on project profitability and margins, while 54% said inefficiencies affected their ability to take on new work.
Disconnected Systems Create Operational Blind Spots
The study found that 85% of UK firms lack a unified, real-time view of project data, while 70% depend on manual workarounds. Furthermore, 54% rely on multiple disconnected systems.
Organizations with connected systems were more than twice as likely to manage performance proactively or predictively—76%, compared with 31% of disconnected firms.
AI Offers Opportunity, but Integration Comes First
Although 94% of respondents believe AI-enabled tools could improve project decisions, only 26% reported using AI widely across multiple business areas.
The findings suggest that organizations need integrated project, resource and financial data before they can fully capitalize on AI-driven insights and automation.
For professional services firms, improving system integration, automating repetitive administration and establishing real-time visibility can help protect margins, improve project delivery and create capacity for sustainable growth.
