Microsoft Introduces AI-Assisted Extension Skills for Dynamics 365 Commerce to Help Retailers Respond Faster to Change

Public preview in version 10.0.49 brings Commerce architecture expertise into AI coding assistants, helping developers move from business requirement to working extension more quickly

Microsoft announced the public preview of extension skills for Dynamics 365 Commerce, available from version 10.0.49. The skills bring first-party product knowledge into command-line AI coding assistants, including GitHub Copilot CLI and Claude Code, helping developers translate business requirements into working commerce extensions more efficiently.

Retail businesses face constant pressure from new selling models, rising customer expectations, regulatory change and competition, and these demands rarely align with IT delivery schedules. For IT teams, the resulting backlog of changes can limit how quickly the business is able to move. Extending a commerce platform is also demanding work. A single requirement can affect the point of sale, commerce runtime, service contracts and channel database, and developers must understand how these components depend on one another and which implementation patterns apply.

From plain-language requirement to implementation

Developers begin by describing the intended business behaviour in plain language. The extension skills then help identify the relevant extension points across the point of sale, commerce runtime, hardware station and channel database, and propose an implementation approach. They can also help scaffold connected components, generate code using established extensibility patterns and validate the build.

Microsoft illustrated the approach with a retailer that needs age verification for restricted products. The requirement is simple to state, but delivering it requires coordinated work across several layers: prompting the store associate, enforcing business rules, moving data across integrations and retaining the required information. The skills are designed to handle much of this groundwork, while developers remain responsible for reviewing the proposed architecture and generated code and for making final engineering decisions.

Enterprise knowledge, not just code generation

General-purpose coding assistants can produce code, but extending an enterprise system also requires knowing where functionality should be extended, which APIs to use and how an extension will fit an architecture designed to support future upgrades. The Commerce extension skills reason over the existing codebase and repository structure, map requirements to appropriate extension points, and draw on extension patterns, APIs, dependencies, templates and implementation guidance. By reducing the technical groundwork, the skills allow developers to concentrate on architecture decisions, business logic and the experiences that differentiate their business.

For IT leaders, this offers a way to turn more business requirements into capabilities without scaling resources at the same rate as demand, whether extensions are built by internal teams, Dynamics 365 partners or software development companies.

Governance, risk and compliance

Commerce transactions affect inventory, tax, payments and revenue, so changes must meet security, regulatory and audit requirements. The skills have completed applicable Microsoft legal and Responsible AI reviews and undergone harm testing. Guardrails are designed to constrain generation to verified Dynamics 365 Commerce APIs and extension approaches, and developers review, test and validate generated code before it reaches production. A more agentic future

Microsoft said the skills are a first step. The company envisions AI assisting across design, development, testing, review and release readiness, with Commerce extensibility expertise applied at every stage.

Availability

The extension skills are available in public preview with Dynamics 365 Commerce version 10.0.49, through the SDK GitHub repository. Microsoft invites developers to try the preview and share feedback.
